Webinar, summit at IT Expo will feature video interoperability barriers
and OVCC interoperability solutions for everyday video communications
SAN RAMON, Calif. – December 19, 2013—The Open Visual Communications Consortium marks the first anniversary of the interconnect network for OVCC compliant services this month as well as OVCC ecosystem growth and momentum toward user adoption and market education that promotes the value of everyday video communications.
OVCC members collaborate to provide interoperability between different service providers’ networks, platforms and equipment, removing the biggest barrier to daily videoconferencing use.
“Moving the enterprise from special to everyday video communications requires a sea change in both business process and technical infrastructure,” said Andrew McFadzen, OVCC president. “OVCC efforts to date have focused necessarily on the technical and business requirements to shift video communications from internal and specially scheduled events to a richer replacement for voice calls and written communications. Moving into the new year, OVCC work will also increase emphasis on educating visual communications users and providers and promoting OVCC value and practical adoption paths to transform daily video communications.”
OVCC Compliant Services
OVCC services include an OVCC compliant interconnect network that supports interoperable video services from OVCC compliant service providers. OVCC members connected the network’s first calls this year testing interoperability quality and scenarios to assure service providers and enterprise users of consistent high-quality video. OVCC compliant service providers BCS Global and Orange Business Services logged the inaugural call, reporting consistently high-quality video and user experiences.
An OVCC certification program will launch next year, formalizing OVCC compliance and providing cross-network and cross-platform interoperability assurances to OVCC service providers and their enterprise users. Release 1.5 and Release 2.0 of the OVCC specification, including a global dial plan, are set for the first half of 2014.
Real-world videoconferencing market opportunity and demand drives the OVCC roadmap and member participation. Technical experts answer business requirements drawn from their own organizations’ experiences and customers as well as requirements determined in the MSP Forum and Technology Provider Forum created in 2013.
The organization’s roadmap includes extending the reach of OVCC services through strategic liaisons and a wholesale policy. Strategic liaisons with other groups in 2014 will reinforce interoperability commitments and share OVCC infrastructure and service developments with others. A new OVCC wholesale policy enables OVCC compliant service providers to re-sell their OVCC service to other providers, increasing access to OVCC services and expanding the potential market. OVCC compliant service providers AT&T, BCS Global and Orange Business Services are now OVCC resellers, too.
New service provider members boosted OVCC European market representation and potential adoption with Deutsche Telekom, Telefonica Global Solutions and Telekom Austria Group. Avaya’s membership broadened the organization’s wide range of equipment providers.
Educating the market and promoting high-quality everyday video communications offers immediate feedback in event environments. OVCC members will educate the market on barriers to video adoption and promote OVCC solutions at events throughout the year.
- A variety of OVCC members will present their interoperability plans and strategies, including OVCC compliance, at an IT Expo summit in January. The summit of Fortune 500 and small and medium sized enterprise video users will name their top interoperability requirements for video use, which OVCC members can incorporate into OVCC offerings.
- Members will present an educational session at Enterprise Connect in March.
- The consortium commissioned a Forrester Research report this year and will present findings and conclusions in a webinar in the spring. The webinar will help service and technology providers promote OVCC and educate their organizations on the barriers to business-to-business video adoption. It will also help video customers determine a practical path to adopt high-quality video into daily business practices.
